WY(C)D – Invasion of the Pilgrims

Wikipedia describes World Youth Day as a youth-oriented Roman Catholic Church event which takes place every two to three years in a different location on the globe.
At some point in the political history someone had decided that this years WYD should take place in Sydney.

And so it happened that about half a million “pilgrims” descended onto Sydney for over a week while the NSW government used the opportunity to impose new rules onto its law abiding citizens in the form of the “annoyance law” without actually clearly defining it.
This absurd law allows police officers to fine harmless people $5500 for wearing annoying T-Shirts and similar things. All for the good of the pious visitors.
Never mind the fact that annoyance is completely subjective and that wearing paraphernalia of another non-catholic religion could already annoy a catholic (god, how annoying those veiled women are).

Julian Morrow of the Chaser’s vents his anger very pointedly as does this blog on smh .

The law eventually got dumped during the WYD week – though only on some technicality. And the Papamobile and Boat-a-cade made their way through an unannoying crowd only interrupted once by a group of protesters handing out condoms to the young participants (what a blasphemy to think they could use them).
